NEW VISION THERAPY

NVT is a unique way of working with the central nervous system to deactivate fight or flight states by releasing jammed nerves (i.e. flipping the Central Nervous System’s fuse board switch from ‘fight, flight, freeze, fawn’ to ‘rest, digest, reconnect and repair’). The touch we use is feather light, almost like a Reiki touch, but making contact with the surface of the clothing of the client. No talking (this is not a talking therapy), no manipulation, no cracking of joints, just gentle techniques to use the fascia as a messenger to the nerves, encouraging them to release. There are no known contraindications but, as a precaution, we would not give treatments following a head trauma (including strokes and brain bleeds) or spinal trauma for at least 4 months, assuming your doctor then gives you his approval.

Does NVT help with the challenges of trauma and PTSD?

As outlined above, NVT practitioners work with the fascia and the cranial nerves to release restrictions so the nervous system can function optimally. This enables the body to go into self-repair mode (i.e. flipping the Central Nervous System’s fuse board switch from ‘fight, flight, freeze, fawn’ to ‘rest, digest, reconnect and repair’).

Flipping the switch to self-repair mode doesn’t just help the body with physical issues. By happy ‘coincidence’, it has a remarkably positive effect on the mental and emotional state, too.

Apart from ‘Gray’s anatomy for students’, one of principle core textbooks for training in this therapy is ‘Accessing the healing power of the vagus nerve: self-help exercises for anxiety, depression, trauma and autism’ by Stanley Rosenberg, who builds on Polyvagal Therory of Stephen Porges PhD. Working on the vagus nerve is fundamental to New Vision Therapy.

In 2024 a small scale study was done to evaluate the efficacy of two to three sessions of New Vision Therapy on measures of wellbeing amongst military veterans with PTSD. The study was a collaboration between Avalon Sports Ltd (NVT practitioners) and the University of Central Lancashire with the help of funding from UK Government and Preston City Council. In November 2024, the idependent report was published and the results were very promising, with significant improvements in a range of markers relating to mental wellbeing and PTSD. This paves the way for further study to be done and longitudinal tracking of NVT’s efficacy. Watch this space!
